Consider Your Risks!

It’s unfortunate when a good thing goes sour and we’re sorry that we even have to bring this up but it is becoming increasingly problematic.

You come to our little paradise to relax and have a good time. We welcome you and don’t want your experience to end up being unpleasant. That’s why we mention the possible hazards of selecting a beach photographer. If for some reason we cannot schedule you a session during your stay, we recommend that you look for another experienced professional portrait photographer.

During the past several years, we have witnessed a great growth in the number of amateurs, part time and transient photographers who are not trained, licensed nor experienced in fine portraiture. These charlatans embellish their credentials, taking advantage of you, our out-of-state guests and portray the image of a professional. Some will offer you bargain prices; others will charge professional prices.

We feel a competent photographer should have at least 10 years experience using professional equipment in beach portraits, with proper Florida business licenses and required photography permits. Beach photography is neither as simple nor easy as it may appear on the surface. Purchasing an automatic camera does not make you a professional photographer. Please be sure to choose a photographer with an actual photo studio, not one with a PO Box, a cell phone as the primary number or home office.  Amateurs operate out of a PO Box or home office.  Do not give your credit card #’s or send deposit money to photographers without an actual photo studio address.  You may not have any monetary recourse if they decide to skip town. In fact, we have witnessed an increasing number of out-of-state photographers who rent rooms for a couple of months and then leave.

Look for a photographer that is licensed to do business in the state of Florida and has a real studio (this is their line of work, not just a hobby). Insist on seeing samples of their work.  Having a good website and being a member of the Chamber of Commerce and/or the Better Business Bureau usually signifies that they are serious about being in business.  Don’t be disappointed with expensive snapshots (or nothing at all) instead of the cherished memories you paid for.
